World Cold Chain summit aims to reduce food waste in the UK
The first ‘World Cold Chain Summit to Reduce Food Waste’ was held in London on the 20th November, in a bid to prevent food waste and establish sustainable cold chains within the UK.
Currently 40% of food across the globe is wasted post-harvest, but estimates by the International Institute of Refrigeration show that as much as 200 million tonnes of perishables could be stopped from going to waste if developing countries had access to the same level of cold chain as in areas such as the UK.
The conference sought to identify actions needed to accelerate progress in cold chain technology and policy development. Key factors were the use of new technologies and practices in creating a more efficient cold chain, as well as the ways in which global C02 emissions could be reduced.
Experts from across both the private and public sectors worked on developing strategies for reaching the ultimate goal of reducing food waste whilst feeding the 800 million people who go hungry on a daily basis.
One way to ensure that food is not wasted when in transport is through wireless temperature monitoring. The Abacus Guardian wireless temperature monitoring system allows you to remotely monitor the temperature of any room, storage area, or refrigerated transport. If the temperature drops or rises beyond the parameters that you have set you will automatically be alerted.
