Notifications concerning pathogenic microorganisms in food to the EU’s recall portal RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) increased by 40% last year, representing an all-time high in notifications of this kind.
642 notifications were reported in 2013, mainly due to pathogens in meat and bivalve molluscs.
Notifications for Salmonella on poultry meat tripled, with most notifications concerning products produced in the EU and Poland. In 34 of these cases, the poultry was classified as a serious risk, meaning that the produce did not comply with EU food safety criteria.
