Global eradication of polio imminent, as long as cold chain is maintained
Experts are this month celebrating a major milestone in the global eradication of polo, but warn that problems with the cold chain can still render vaccines ineffective.
According to the US Centres for Diseases, the second of the three forms of poliovirus has been eliminated following mass vaccination campaigns, however instability in the Middle Eastern region could lead to a new outbreak.
This is due to damaged health infrastructure, poor health access, and massive movements of at risk populations in areas such as Syria and Palestine. These factors mean that it is increasingly difficult to maintain the necessary cold chain and protect vaccines from reaching unsafe temperatures.
Ensure that issues over temperature throughout the cold chain don’t cause vaccines to become ineffective. Abacus Guardian allows you to remotely monitor the temperature of any room, storage area, or refrigerated transport. If the temperature drops or rises beyond the parameters that you have set you will automatically be alerted.
