Cases of salmonella enteritis have been found all over the UK, including 55 cases reported in Hampshire, 43 in the West Midlands and 33 in Cheshire. This is as well as a detected presence in Austria and France.
Dr Paul Cleary, a consultant epidemiologist who is leading the PHE investigation believes this could have all stemmed from a single source due to the closely related strains.
“We are working with our colleagues across PHE, at the Food Standards Agency and many other public health organisations in Europe to investigate the cause of this outbreak and hope to have more conclusive evidence shortly,” explained Cleary.
An FSA spokeswoman added, “We are asking all UK local authorities to be highly vigilant with any cases of illness that appear in their area and report them immediately.”
